About the park
What type of wildlife will we see?
With just over 330 square kilometers of area, the park might seem relatively small compared to other Tanzanian reserves. Nonetheless, it is still home to stunning and striking wildlife. The park is famously known for the black-maned tree-climbing lions that gracefully climb and roam across the treetops. Besides these predators, the park is also home to a diverse range of wildlife including healthy populations of Maasai giraffe, elephant, baboons, hippo, impala, buffalo, and numerous other species. On approaching the lake, a multitude of birdlife can be spotted. A wide variety of beautiful birds like storks, herons, pink flamingos, and pelicans can be observed, especially in close proximity to this water source.
Top experiences to enjoy at Lake Manyara
The park boasts an array of stimulating activities for visitors to enjoy. Among the popular experiences is observing the awe-inspiring tree-climbing lions, which ranks high on many visitors’ agendas. Additionally, guests can traverse a series of suspension bridges that reveal an up-close view of the park’s ancient forests. Perhaps a guided bicycle tour appeals to you, where you will cycle through the vibrant Mayoka community and continue on to the lakeshore.
Here, you can capture some stunning photographs of the striking flamingos as you wade through the water in your rubber boots. For those interested in immersing themselves in the local culture, take a half-day tour to Mto Wa Mbu town, located at the park’s entrance, to engage with local farmers, artisans, and craftspeople. This tour grants a unique opportunity to learn more about their way of life.
When to visit
The optimum recommendation for visiting the park is during the dry season from June to September. Nevertheless, game watching can still be enjoyed throughout the year.
For those who wish to avoid the crowds, the low season months of April and May are ideal, as the northern section of the park is not as congested with visitors. Despite being within the rainy season, the months of November to May are breathtaking when the scenery becomes lush and abundant. Lower rates are also likely to be available during this period.
